I disagree, people have

I disagree, people have become reliant on Flash to make things sparkly and in the process, are segregating users and risking their SEO.

1. Disabled users have always had issues with flash content and the rest of society is now starting to see the frustrations that go on daily for users of visually impaired browsers.
2. Flash is notoriously bulky and hard to maintain unless your developer creates the files to allow for content to be pulled in dynamically from outside sources like xml. Which most don't and most clients do not know they should even ask for.
3. Javascript has come leaps and bounds, new libraries make it easy to create interactive pages that are smaller, more accessible, and allow for excellent search engine optimization. Add to this the capabilities for HTML5 and CSS3 and you really won't need flash for more than video, audio and on-the-fly generated dynamic content.
4. Users are becoming less and less patient. They won't sit and wait for your flash site to download connected to their fiber internet, what makes you think they will wait for your content to download on their 3G/4G?
5. Developers/designers/marketers need to test their designs and concepts out on focus groups first. Flash sites are often designed for the bells and whistles of flash instead of for the user. Gimmick focused as opposed to user focused. Remember your goal is conversion or to inform, get to it as simply, effectively and quickly as possible.

Just my two cents.

THANK YOU! You said exactly

THANK YOU! You said exactly what I have been unable to coherently say. Although I come from a different place (non-developer, iphone user, mac/apple-hater) you describe things perfectly. Trust the user to know what they want.

As we saw with the iPod, no matter what you create, others will do things with it you never thought of, podcast. You run the risk of killing your business if don't let people have some control over the toys they bought and paid for.

I really like your example. One visualization I always go back to for inspiration is We Feel Fine. It's a beautiful visualization with real emotion.

Yes this game is very popular, I used to play it, according to Wikipedia Go is one of the oldest board games in human history, a game for two players that is noted for being rich in strategic complexity despite its simple rules.
Go originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago, and although it is not known exactly when the game was invented.

Hi Denise! I'm a bit late to

Hi Denise! I'm a bit late to the party, but I like the way you break down the social impetus for the bra status trend. I definitely agree that people love to be "in the know" because that's the beauty of memes, right? Early adopters can wear a badge of pride by being meme-savvy, and then everyone else begins to follow suit because they want to appear meme-savvy too. I surmise it's about using the language of the interwebs, and conveying through simple cues that you are Internet Cool. The use of acronyms such as FML, MLIA/MLIG, tl;dr come to mind.

It really is a pity though that nothing proactive came out of the bra trend. My biggest question is wanting to know who came up with it, and how it spread like it did. I know for a fact that Facebook tracks commonly used words and phrases in status updates. I bet they could do the same thing and see how the bra trend spread geographically. Major marketing data to be had and sold [Insert Dr. Evil laugh].

Hey Shena,

Thanks for the comment. It sounds like we had the same experience of it. The speed was phenomenal. And like you, I am wondering how something like this could be done for a good cause (or truth be known, for a client - we are in the biz after all).

Its such a fine line, though, you can't dampen the fun or it won't go anywhere. Very interesting to think about none-the-less. I am curious now to see if we will see it circle back through. Aya mentioned late last night that it was moving through Tokyo.

Great comments!

I'm so glad you touched upon so many of the elements I was thinking about yesterday. I felt similar confusion late Thursday, then TMI over some of the colors, then driving home and discussing it with a friend a sense of loss for the whole thing, for what this type of hype could have been. Funny how I haven't seen anything move that fast through Facebook in a long time (since the de-friend for a Whopper) and it was more about show your sexy side than doing anything productive...."Where's the beef?!"

Before bed, I wanted to type "PEACE" and see if that would spread around the globe and by morning my friend Lisa in Sweden would have the same status. She's Black, btw.

Hey it worked!!! even with

Hey it worked!!! even with GUIDs!!! i had a function that takes the comma delimited and convert it to a temp table then i would JOIN the function to my query. this worked fine for numbers and guid IN SQL -- although i modified the function to work with GUIDs( parse also '{' and '}' and ',') it worked fine even with guids in sql but i get a cast error(string to guid) in my application although im getting the correct result set in sql and are passing the right paramater types(string/nvarchar). A next alternative i was thinking of was to create a temp table and populate it with the guids(im getting the guids from a chklistbox) maybe call a looped insert statement to populate it then use the temp table in my query either JOIN it or 'Select IN(Select Guids from @temptable)' but i wont have to go thru all of this!!! thanks to this post :) much appreciated!!!

My mistake...

SELECT convert(varchar(100), Value) FROM dbo.Split('ListItem1, ListItem2',',')

works perfectly - i was trying to be too smart and put in too many quotes.

Thank you for the excellent solution.

Regards
